Calgary Plumbing:How to Make All Natural Drain Cleaner

Calgary Plumbing:How to Make All Natural Drain Cleaner

Probably the most common way of dealing with drain clogs for people is to pour half a jug of a chemical cleaner down the drain and bust the clogs that way and this route is effective. But if you stop and think about it, you are literally pouring several very poisonous chemicals down the drain where it goes through the sewer system and out into the world again. Many of these chemicals do not break down properly and can cause damage to your pipes and beyond. You don’t have to be an environmentalist to see that strong chemicals down your drain on a regular basis will corrode your pipes! But you can make your own drain cleaner and though what you make won’t instantly get rid of the clogs, it also won’t damage your pipes beyond recognition!

How to Make Drain Cleaner

There are a few recipes out there to make drain cleaner with the ingredients in your kitchen, so here we go!

Bulk Drain Cleaner

If you’re a fan of cleaning your drains regularly (in order to prevent clogs from forming in the first place!) this recipe is for you. You will need:

2 cups of boiling water

1 cup of salt

1 cup of baking soda

¼ cup of cream of tartar

Mix together the salt, baking soda and cream of tartar. Pour the dry ingredients into a large jar and mix until well stirred.

When you need it, measure out ¼ cup of the mixture and carefully pour it down the drain. Follow up with two cups of boiling water. Let it sit for thirty minutes and then run some more water through it or flush your toilet, depending on what you were cleaning. This is a safe way to clean your drains every three months or so.

Emergency Drain Declogger

Ok, a couple of notes before you use this one: First, DO NOT USE DRANO AFTERWARDS! Using Drano after using this recipe will cause stinky fumes and acid to form in your sink. Second, you may have to do this a couple of times before it will work. Finally, don’t use this on plastic pipes or they might melt from hot water!

Here we go:

½ cup of baking soda

1 cup of vinegar

4 gallons of boiling water

Pour the baking soda into your drain (or toilet) and then ½ cup of vinegar. In drains, you’ll have to stop it up to prevent the fizz from escaping, in toilets, the fizz shouldn’t get too far anyway. Then follow up with the second ½ cup of vinegar. Let it sit for fifteen minutes and then pour down the four gallons of boiling water.

This is a good way to deal with those sudden clogs made up of grease and hair in particular. The fizz caused by the baking soda and vinegar chews up clogs and gets your drains free again!

As you can see, it’s pretty easy to get rid of mild to moderate clogs in your sinks or toilet without calling a plumber and with the ingredients in your kitchen. No harsh chemicals and toxins which chew at your pipes (or your skin!) and a lot of money saved. Simple!
