Calgary Heating:Wood Burning Furnaces
Did you know that around three million Canadians today still use wood burning furnaces for heat, either to wholly heat their homes or to supplement another heating strategy. Wood burning furnaces can be hooked into the entire house the same way as an electric or gas furnace (indeed, some furnaces support both wood and electrical heating in the same unit) or they can be used to heat smaller rooms such as the living room. These types of furnaces may seem very rustic and old fashioned, but they are still based on a very sound strategy of heating a home well and are still very useful today!
Wood burning furnaces have a few advantages; they are cheaper than gas or electrical so long as you can get a good price on wood and they provide fairly even heating. Wood burning furnaces don’t die if the power goes out and you don’t have to worry about gas leaks. Wood stoves or furnaces are fairly low maintenance and can be installed by the homeowner, though there will be more legwork involved in making sure that the chimney is installed properly, along with things like insurance changes. And many small communities with wood burning stoves can support local workers by hiring people to cut firewood for the season or by purchasing fire wood from local suppliers.
The main disadvantage of course is that you have to find, purchase and store your fuel which can take up a lot of space and time, plus you have to know how to set up your wood and light your furnace properly. Furthermore, you have to keep on top of the furnace so that you don’t lose heat in the middle of the afternoon. And installation can be a bit of a nuisance, particularly if you have to install a chimney as well.
Wood burning furnaces are seen most often in northern, rural communities where electricity is less stable and where there is a lot more wood to find and use. However, any place in Canada could have wooden heaters. Some homes have them as both a heating and decorative unit while other people prefer to have them so they can save money and live more off the grid. Whatever the reason, at around 10% of the population using these heaters, wood burning furnaces are here to stay!
