Calgary Heating: Dangers of a Gas Furnace
Hello, it’s Kyle here! We’re winding our way to spring now and it’s just about time to turn the furnace off for the season. But before we bid adieu to our furnace, it’s a good idea to understand some of the dangers associated with gas furnaces and how easy it is to prevent them! As part of your spring cleaning routine, you should ensure that you give your furnace a once over so that by fall, it’s ready to go again.
The biggest danger associated with a gas furnace is the potential build up of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a type of odourless, colorless gas which combines with oxygen in the air to make carbon dioxide. Humans cannot breathe either one and carbon monoxide poisoning is associated with exhaustion, nausea, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and even death.
Carbon monoxide is the biggest danger in gas furnaces, but it’s also the easiest to fix!
As part of your spring cleaning, make sure to take a few minutes out to check your fan filter. The filter in the fan is responsible for removing dust, dirt and other junk fromthe air before pushing it through the rest of the home. As a result, the filter can become clogged, thus reducing its efficiency and making it less able to filter air properly. Theclogs can also lead to a leak of carbon monoxide because the heat exchanger becomes cracked, leaking out combustible gasses. But it’s so easy to prevent this! Simply check and replace your furnace filter when it looks grimy.
The second most common danger is a gas leak.
This one is only second because while it is just as dangerous as carbon monoxide, it’s more obvious. Natural gas leakages can cause dizziness, fainting, nausea and even death, plus these gasses can explode, causing house fires and worse. Gas leaks in this case are usually caused by cracks in the system which then leaks out combustible gas. Fortunately, the natural gas in the furnace is pretty obvious to the nose, so if you smell gas, get out of the house. Gas leaks can be ignited all too easily, so stop everything you’re doing and get out of the house, then shut off the gas and call the fire department, your gas provider or a heating repair technician.
Other dangers associated with a gas furnace include electrical shock (make sure to turn the power off when doing work on the furnace) and fire. In the case of preventing fire, make sure nothing combustible is stored anywhere near the furnace, such as gasoline, paper, cardboard or cloth.
Gas furnaces are one of the most common heating units and one of the best to use, but they do come with their share of dangers.
Treat your furnace with respect and care andyou shouldn’t have to worry about any of these things happening to you.
