Requirements for Residential Smoke Alarms in Calgary

According to Alberta Building Code, smoke alarms are required on every storey of your home and inside every bedroom.

Regular testing and maintenance is crucial to ensuring the efficiency of your smoke alarm. The City of Calgary recommends testing your alarms at least once per month and changing the batteries every year. If your alarms were installed more than ten years ago, we recommend having them replaced.

Need help installing new smoke alarms or replacing old ones? ClearView Services is here to provide you with expert solutions.

When it comes to selecting your new alarms, you have three options: ionization, photoelectric, and dual-sensor. Dual-sensor alarms (which feature both ionization and photoelectric technology) are often recommended for more effective protection.

ClearView Services will help you choose the right type of smoke alarm for your home and ensure that your new devices are set up to code.

Should You Also Install a CO Detector?

Since 2006, carbon monoxide alarms are required by Alberta Building Code to be installed in newly constructed residential properties. However, this requirement does not apply to homes built before then—making CO alarm installation even more important if you live in an older property.

Carbon monoxide leaks are often difficult to notice, since CO is an odourless and colourless gas. If inhaled over an extended period of time, it can affect your breathing and heart—and can even result in death.

Does your home run gas-fuelled appliances or equipment, such as natural gas furnaces, hot water tanks, or fireplaces? If so, carbon monoxide detectors should be placed strategically throughout your home.

Alberta Municipal Affairs offers the following guidelines when installing CO alarms:

  • There should be an alarm installed on each level (even the basement) and outside every bedroom.
  • Keep alarms at least five feet away from fuel-burning equipment.
  • Avoid installing alarms near air registers or windows, since drafts coming in can lower the alarm’s efficiency.

Our experts are up to date on code and regulations involving CO detector installations. We will supply you with the right type of CO alarm and make sure your devices are placed in the right locations and properly installed.
