Calgary Plumbing: Remodeling? Check your pipes!

It’s remodeling season and that means time to start pulling things apart in order to make  more room, change up things like sinks and showers and renovate basements or attics. However, in the course of pulling apart rooms in your home for renovating, you should take the opportunity to check your heating and water pipes. Renovations are a great time to do this because you’ll be exposing the pipe work anyway, so you might as well take the opportunity to take a look!

What Should You Look For?

When inspecting your pipes, look for the following:
• Loss of water pressure

• Corrosion or damage to your pipes

• Age-if your pipes are fifty or sixty years old, it may be time to replace them.
Other signs of damage may include leaky pipes, mold growth and general wear and tear. There may even be sagging and other signs of more severe damage!

Replacing Your Pipes

If you decide that part of your renovations should include some changes to your pipes, you have some decisions ahead of you. First, you have to decide on a material for your pipes. There are three basic materials that are used now: copper, Chlorinated polyvinylchloride (a type of plastic) and PEX (Cross-linked polyethylene). The first two materials are the most common while PEX has only been in use for ten years and so it’s impossible to say whether or not it is going to be any good in the long run.
Copper is the longest lasting of the pipes at around fifty years, but it’s most prone to breaking if it freezes. Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is more light weight and more affordable, but it too can crack when the temperature drops. Usually though, it’s the CPC which is chosen because it’s affordable and easy to work with for plumbers or for renovators.
Now you have to decide if you’re going to do the job yourself or hire a plumber to do itfor you. If you hire a plumber, make sure that the plumber you get is certified, qualified, and comes with good recommendations. You should also ensure that you get an estimate up front, don’t pay for money upfront (unless the contractor has the prepaid contracting license) and make sure you ask any and all questions about the process! Doing your research will ensure that the whole process is done smoothly and quickly so that you can get on with your renovations.
It may seem like a nuisance, but if you’re pulling apart bits of your home anyway for the sake of your renovations, you might as well check on your pipes too. This could save you costly repairs in the future, so get it down this renovating season.
