Calgary Furnace: A Noisy Furnace-Heating Unit Repair

Most furnaces are built to be very quiet; you would get a hum or a bit of low, constant rumbling at worst. However, furnaces can become noisy and though some people become accustomed to the noise, it’s not something you should have to live with! Here in Calgary, heating is one of the predominant concerns for homeowners and renters because it gets so cold in our long winters! Noisy furnaces are one of the more common complaints we get, but for the most part, this is a problem that can be fixed by the homeowner and the right tools (mostly; we’ll get into situations where you will need help in a bit.)

Calgary Furnace: Causes of Noisy Furnaces

Noisy furnaces can be caused by a number of problems:

  • Squealing or squeaking is usually the result of a slipped belt or rotors or shaft bearings in need of oiling
  • A low pitched rumble is usually caused by a maladjusted pilot light, but only if the burner is off.
  • A low pitched rumble when the burner is on is usually caused by dirty gas burners
  • Rattling or banging is probably being caused by a broken fan or by dirt build up in the ducts
  • Whining is usually caused by a worn out fan. Furnace fans have a life expectancy of up to twenty years and once they wear out, they whine about it!

Most often, noises from your furnace is caused by the fan or the belts within the fan. When they aren’t to run smoothly, they complain loudly about it and need some repairs.

Fixing a Noisy Furnace

Fixing a noisy furnace is largely a matter of figuring out what is causing the noise and then redressing the problem which you should be able to do on your own without too much effort. For example, squealing and squeaking is usually caused by a problem in the belts, rotors or shaft bearings. In order to fix this, you will probably have to oil the rotors and bearings and perhaps readjust the slipped belts so that they only depress to one inch in center span. You may also have to replace frayed belts. In the case of the pilot light, readjusting it should be perfectly adequate. And of course, you should be sure to clean out your fans with a dry rag or a hand vacuum.

Time to Open Up the Furnace!

Usually you will have to consult your owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to open up your furnace, but if you don’t have one, then you may have to do a bit of experimenting. All furnaces have a panel which can be opened up, usually near the pilot light so that it can be relit when it goes out. This panel must be opened up if you want to adjust the pilot light in any way.

A different panel-the filter panel-must be removed if you want to replace the fan filter (this should be done regularly) or vacuum out the filter or blower parts of the fan. You should be able to find this panel with ease since it will be where the filter is! You may be able to simply lift away the panel or you may have to unscrew it from the furnace.

If you’ve done things like clean and tighten the belts and cleaned the fan filter and fixed the pilot light and it’s still noisy, you may have to call in heating specialists because the problem may be far deeper than what you can reach safely. Another time to call the heating technician may be when you need to replace the fans and belts completely if you aren’t comfortable with doing it yourself.

Some people learn to live with their noisy furnace, but a noisy furnace is also usually an inefficient furnace and you could be losing a lot of money and energy. Don’t feel like you have to live with the banging and squealing when it can be repaired and often done under your own power.
