Plumbing is an extremely complicated industry full of complex piping systems, machinery made of dozens of moving parts, and lengthy systems that bring clean water in and take dirty water out; that being said, taking care of it in your home really isn’t that hard. A lot of our customers come to us with problems that could have easily been avoided.

Here are 10 stupid things that will ruin your home’s plumbing:

1) Putting leftovers down the drain

The drain in your kitchen sink is a pipe that takes water from the sink and sends it to the sewer system. It is not a garbage disposal. One of the worst things you can do to ruin your plumbing is scraping the leftovers off of your plate and putting them down the drain. Unless you want your pipe to get clogged, put your leftovers in the garbage.

2) Ignoring leaks

That leaky faucet in the kitchen is incredibly annoying, so we don’t know how so many of our customers ignore it. Make no mistake, though, they do. That leak could be the sign of a bigger problem, and it is costing your litres of water each day.

3) Cleaning with harmful chemicals

That chemical cleaner might look great, and it could even get the job done right, but cleaning with harmful chemicals too much will ultimately destroy your system. Overusing any of them will slowly corrode the pipe. Get pros who can go au natural.

4) Going DIY with no experience

DIYing might seem like a good idea. You give yourself something to do, save a few bucks, and earn some brownie points. The problem is that if you don’t have any experience, you will probably make things worse. We’ve had plenty of calls from people who tried to be Mr. Fix-it and ended up destroying their system.

5) Forgetting preventative maintenance

Your plumbing system is like a beautiful garden: when left untended, it slowly turns brown and dies away. If you don’t get regular preventative maintenance on your plumbing system in Calgary, then the pipes will turn brown and the system will rot. Don’t forget!

6) Flushing trash down the toilet

We can’t tell you how many calls we’ve had from people complaining about clogs and other problems. Your toilet is not the trash bin. Flushing waste down the toilet will result in clogs. It isn’t worth it!

7) Not insulating pipes

If you haven’t noticed already, it gets mighty cold in Calgary during the winter. This means you need to take extra caution and cover your pipes up during the winter. If you don’t, they will freeze. Get a certified plumbing company to help you avoid this issue.

8) Going with the cheapest option

When go cheap you get cheap. Choosing the cheapest plumber, equipment, or quick fix is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Uncertified, cheap plumbers will harm your plumbing. Don’t fall for the tricks.

9) Leaving hoses connected in winter

Remember what we said about the Calgary winter? Leaving a hose connected when it is freezing outside is a good way to cause added pressure in pipes. Too much and they will burst.

10) Not locating your shutoff valve

This is a big no-no. The water shutoff valve could be your lifesaver. You need to know where it is, and tell your family too. If there is a water emergency and your home starts to get flooded, then shutting off this valve will save you from disaster. A lot of our customers tell us they never bothered finding it. This won’t just ruin your plumbing – it could also ruin your home.

Plumbing is something best left to the professionals, because without the proper knowledge and experience, you will usually only make things worse. Still, there are some simple things that you can do to make things easier for you. Don’t do any of these 10 stupid things that will ruin your home’s plumbing. If you do, you will be seeing us soon!
