Skipping a Carbon Monoxide Test Can Be Deadly

Posted at October 21, 2014 | By : | Categories : Blog | Comments Off on Skipping a Carbon Monoxide Test Can Be Deadly

Carbon monoxide (chemical symbol CO) is notoriously known as the “silent killer” because you can’t see, hear or smell the gas. Initial signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are flulike symptoms including nausea, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, confusion and difficulty breathing. If levels of CO are high enough in a closed and unventilated space, death by suffocation could occur.

Carbon monoxide is a by-product of incomplete combustion. Equipment that is not venting properly is the main cause of flue gases and CO getting into a building. Sources of CO include malfunctioning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, ovens and water heaters and other appliances that burn fossil fuels like natural gas or propane.

While early versions of carbon monoxide alarms were somewhat unreliable and expensive, alarms on the market today are affordable. They can recognize carbon monoxide from a fuel-burning appliance in the home and trigger an alarm before CO levels become dangerous.

ClearView Plumbing and Heating is a Calgary based company that can carry out CO testing and installation of carbon monoxide alarms in your home or workplace.
