Going Green is the New Black

There are many reasons for making the conscious shift toward an eco-friendly way of life, whether it’s financial or environmental. Whatever the case may be, going green offers a multitude of benefits for your wallet and for the ecosystem. Migrating toward eco-friendly living one room at a time is a great way to approach a more sustainable (and affordable) way of life without being overwhelmed. Here are some eco-friendly must haves for your new green bathroom.
Low-Flow Toilet

It’s the appliance that started it all. The way we “go to the bathroom” has never stopped evolving. We are constantly innovating new ways to dispose of blackwater as we become more and more environmentally conscious. When it comes to upgrading your old toilet, you don’t have to go to the extreme to be eco-friendly. While compostable systems are highly efficient, they aren’t always pleasant, especially in an urban environment. Consider installing a low-flow system which uses significantly less water to flush down waste than older toilets. Swapping out that huge tank and deep bowl for a newer, more efficient model will save you tons of money on your water bill every year.

Energy Efficient Showerhead & Sink Faucet
Replacing your current showerhead with a low-flow efficient showerhead won’t make a difference to your daily bathing experience, but it’ll save gallons of water and energy needed to heat it. Make sure your sink faucet is leak-free and remember to close the tap while you’re brushing your teeth to avoid unnecessary waste. If you really want to get fancy, consider installing a motion sensor faucet.

Green Cleaning Products & Non-Disposable Wipes
For over a century, cleaning product companies has made us believe that the only way to clean a dirty bathroom is to attack it with non-biodegradable and chemically toxic products. This is simply not the case. There are plenty of tried and true old-fashioned ingredients you can use in your bathroom that aren’t toxic to you, your kids or your pets, and that are completely biodegradable and safe for the environment, such as Castile soap, lemon, white vinegar and baking soda (to name a few). Buy eco-friendly cleaning products or make your own! To be extra green in your bathroom, clean with reusable and washable scrubbies and wipes instead of paper towels.

A Simple Natural Cleaning Product Recipe

This all-purpose cleaner is perfect for cleaning the surfaces in your bathroom. All you’ll need is:
A glass jar with sealable lid (a mason jar or pasta sauce container work great)
Orange peels (enough to fill the jar)
White Vinegar (enough to fill the jar)
Empty spray bottle

Simply place the orange peels into the jar, and don’t be shy to really stuff them to the lid. Then, pour the white vinegar over the orange peels, being careful not to spill. Close the jar tight and keep it under the kitchen sink or somewhere safe for 4 to 6 weeks. When your cleaner is ready, simply transfer the liquid into the spray bottle and voila! Thanks to the disinfecting and deodorizing power of the vinegar AND the citrus, your spray cleaner is as powerful and as effective as any chemically toxic version. And it smells great too!
