Summers are getting longer and hotter, and electricity is getting more expensive. It makes sense more than ever to reduce the amount of money you spend on air conditioning. Here are some tips to help keep you cool while keeping your costs down:

Don’t set the temperature too low on your thermostat. It’s tempting to set the number low to get maximum cooling, but you’ll find that 25 degrees is reasonable and comfortable. Only set it lower if you really need to.

Program your thermostat. Have your thermostat set to make your home slightly warmer when you’re not in it for more than a few hours, and then begin cooling just before you come back. This will significantly increase your AC efficiency.

Reduce the heating effect of sunlight. Keep blinds and curtains closed. Apply a reflective coating to your windows. For a slightly bigger job, removable awnings can help reduce sunlight in the summer and increase it in the winter.

Don’t open windows. This is especially true on humid days. Opening your windows will allow humidity to enter your home, causing your air conditioner to work extra hard.

Have your air conditioning system, including ductwork, inspected and serviced by certified HVAC technicians like those at ClearView.
