Calgary winters are extremely demanding on heating systems. At the heart of every home heating system is a furnace, which heats air in various ways before it circulates through your home. No matter what type of furnace you have (gas, electric, etc) it is important to keep it in working order.

Furnace maintenance starts with knowing the signs that something might be wrong. Here are a few things to look for that can tell you your furnace is malfunctioning:

  1. Check your thermostat. Sometimes, a malfunctioning furnace is simply due to a faulty thermostat instead of the furnace itself. This is the best case-scenario as thermostats are easier an cheaper to repair than furnaces.
  2. Check for uneven heating in your home. If you notice that one room is being heated more than another, this could signal a problem with the furnace. However it could also indicate a problem with the duct system, which might need balancing or cleaning.
  3. If your furnace is turning on and off in short bursts, it may be malfunctioning. Normally furnaces only go on for extended periods of time and shut off until the temperature of a room drops below the desired level. Short cycles can be caused by everything from dirty filters to broken blowers or even a malfunctioning thermostat.

Noticing any of these tell-tale signs means it’s time to call ClearView for an inspection. Calling us before your furnace breaks down completely will save you from being stuck without heat during the Calgary winter.
